Traveling Solo: Embracing The Freedom And Adventure — Suetanya Mchorgh
I started traveling solo at the age of 20. I was young, full of optimism and going there was the best thing that could have happened to me. I learned to rely on myself, navigate the streets of a foreign city safely, plan a budget and laugh through hard times.
Travel can be challenging and can force you to step out of your comfort zone. But the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
Planning your first solo stay doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you along the way.
When planning your independent trip, be sure to book accommodation in a safe and central location. You might consider finding a hotel or apartment that is within walking distance of the places you want to go or close to reliable public transportation. Think about whether you’ll be walking around alone at night, and make sure your accommodation is in a well-lit and safe neighborhood.
Scared To Travel Alone: How To Overcome Your Solo Travel Anxiety
Apartments are great if you really want to feel independent and cook your own meals, but if you’re traveling alone for the first time, the comfort of a reception staff you can call on for guidance will be important.
Just because you’ve traveled somewhere alone doesn’t mean you should be lonely. Sign up for walking city tours or guided tours of museums or monuments. It’s a great way to get to know the situation and meet like-minded people.
Consider taking a cooking, dance or art class. You’ll be able to pick up a new skill that you can use at home and it’s a great way to experience a new place.
Don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with other solo travelers you come across. Share a table with them during lunch or help take photos; you don’t have to be best friends, but you can find a friend for life!
What It’s Really Like To Travel By Yourself — Her Bags Were Packed
It’s true, solo travel is not without its challenges. You may feel lonely, you may get lost, and you may struggle dragging your suitcase down the train platform. You can’t prevent every bad thing from happening, but a little planning can make your solo travel experience easier.
If you’re worried about feeling lonely, sign up for tours and classes in advance, and consider buying tickets to shows or museums you want to see before you arrive. This will help keep you busy once you reach your destination.
If you’re worried about directions, download maps to your phone that you can see outside of wifi zones and without using data. Familiarize yourself with the street names and carry a card for your hotel in case you forget where it is. If you really get lost, just hop in a taxi and show them your hotel card. Don’t be afraid to ask the shopkeepers or hotel concierge for directions, they can also point you in the direction of restaurants and cafes off the tourist track.
As for your suitcase, learn from my experience as a 20-year-old and don’t overdo it. If you can’t comfortably lift your suitcase up the stairs yourself, it’s too heavy. If you’re traveling alone, no one will notice if you wear the same clothes over and over again, so limit the amount of clothes and shoes you pack.
