She is the first Native American woman to be elected to the Minnesota Senate as an educator. Retired from her role as a public school librarian after 25 years of service, she recognized that students wanted to read and hear about children’s shared life experiences. Pairs that reflect the rich diversity of her original students and the community to which she is a daughter and granddaughter. A member of the Standing Rock Lutas So Nation, the exceptionally knowledgeable senator is committed to supporting positive legislation for our American Indian and disadvantaged people in Minnesota. We are very proud to have her with us. is A trailblazer in this area and it’s my honor to welcome her. Just a side note, she also has the role of Assistant Minority Leader in the Minnesota Senate, and it’s the first time that an original American American is in this position. Oh, in Minnesota, so we’re very excited that before we start and you get to talk to Cynthia, I hope you can tell me a little bit about your background and your role and your involvement in America. The Indian Library Association is certainly good Shant La Makota and my name is Senator Mary Kanish I am a state senator here in Minnesota and as you said I have been a library media specialist for 25 years and I am in I can’t think of a better job. A school is more than capable of doing this and as a teacher I am often looking for ways to expand my knowledge of literature and authors and as mentioned I know it is very important that our students Literature and listening. stories about themselves or their ancestors as well as always looking for literature that truly reflects our students The American Indian La La La Library Association really made all the difference for me because they were able to Be a memorable resource. As we call it the American Indian Library Association was founded in 1979 and we’re there to raise awareness that there are library services for Native Americans and mostly because they are so inadequate and so what What we are trying to do is address the needs of the library. That’s really focused on American Indians and Alaska Natives and so we’re creating programs to improve Indian libraries that use the work of our Native American authors and we want to make sure that we’re documenting the culture and the language. We have stories and information and information for our schools. Public and research libraries especially on reservations and that is why we are committed to sharing information and learning about Indian cultures and languages values and information and with the wider community you know that is great. That’s exactly what we want. Do we want to highlight this unique author whose books have always been my long-time favorites and that we are also responsible for every year that comes you know the current list of books for teachers and people to read but we are the American Indian Youth Award too and so I would encourage anyone and everyone to go to AA do aaet a i l a l a net.org and read a little bit about us and there are great resources about us.
