I have never felt as free as traveling alone as a black woman. There’s something liberating about living on your own terms while traveling. You can wake up whenever you want. No one dictates your schedule and as a solo black female traveler, you decide what to do. Coming from black American culture where black women have to get a lot done, this is refreshing.
As a society, we are not taught to do things alone so it is strange if anyone hears someone else doing it. In particular, traveling is presented to us as an activity to be undertaken with others for an epic, memorable adventure. However, don’t let other people’s opinions shape your adventure. You can also have fun alone as a black solo female traveler!
Black people are not the majority in every city or town in the world. Therefore, not having many black people means that people in that country are probably interested in who you are and what country you come from. Depending on where you are, staring is common and may lead to questions or even photos.
If you’re not used to this as a Black female solo traveler, it can be intimidating and possibly overwhelming. Take a few deep breaths and think about how you want to respond. Sometimes these questions can lead to deep and impactful conversations. Other times, this can cause more discomfort. Solo black female travel means trusting your instincts and deciding what’s best for you at the time.

Sexual stereotypes about black women stem from the media and society’s assumptions about black women. I experienced a bit of hypersexualization and fetishism when I lived in Europe. You may even hear black women being mistaken for prostitutes in various parts of the world. These experiences can happen, but for me, they are few and far between!
Many people assume that if you go on a solo women’s trip to Europe or another predominantly white destination, you won’t find any black people. But don’t forget we are everywhere! There are communities of black people all over the world, from Europe to South America to Asia.
Of course, we have to travel to connect with new people from various backgrounds. It’s great to be able to connect with black people of different nationalities and nationalities. Those connections create dynamic conversations about being Black in your respective countries and learning about the culture in which you find yourself.
You knew this would happen, right? Yes, anti-Blackness and racism exist abroad because they are global issues. If you have experienced discrimination in your own country, you probably already have some strategies for responding. However, remember that you are still in a country that is not your own. You may argue with racists back home or take further action, without consequences. This is not always the case overseas, so be careful if you choose to deal with it.

However, I don’t want that to deter you from traveling alone. There are many Black solo female travelers around the world and anti-Blackness is not the entirety of our experience. I’ve had uncomfortable moments when people have pushed me into photos without asking and touched my hair. It’s unpleasant, but we can’t control people’s behavior. So this won’t stop you from exploring the world either!
When women travel alone, safety comes first – so lie when you need to. I recommend lying because everyone you meet doesn’t need to know that you are traveling alone. Yes, the people are really friendly and welcoming. I have had many amazing experiences traveling alone as a black woman in Mexico and throughout Europe.
