Gordon continued on his freight train, but when he reached the top of the Main Line, the trucks held him back and he refused to try and make it to the top. His driver makes a phone call to the conductor of Sodor’s railway, the Fat Controller from Sir Topham Hatt who sends Edward to give Gordon a tip. Working together, they reached the top of the hill, but Gordon continued on his way without even thanking Edward.
Later, Edward was startled when he heard a voice he had never heard before. He saw James talking to the tank engine, who introduced himself as Thomas and the two smooth engines welcomed him to Sodor. Gordon arrives and scoffs at Thomas’ claims that he’s good for anything other than defending the teachers. As Gordon leaves, Edward apologizes for teasing Gordon by telling Thomas that he usually does that. Then, a big green engine scared into the rooms, trying to get to his room quickly before the rain. Edward tells Thomas about Henry and how he doesn’t like the rain. Edward then tells the story of how a frightened Henry refused to leave the tunnel in case the rain ruined his painting. When the passengers and even James couldn’t get him out, the Fat Controller left Henry there. It also has a wall built in front of the tunnel, since it is being repaired so that it cannot be used by other machines. Edward started to explain how Henry finally got out of the tunnel after Gordon opened his safety valve outside the tunnel, but Gordon stopped him, not wanting to embarrass him in front of the new engine, and saying he wanted to sleep sleep.

Once attached, he quickly leaves before the crew has a chance to connect Thomas to the other end of the train. Thomas is forced to run with the gang as Gordon taunts him, all the way to Wellsworth. Edward saw everything and was shocked. As soon as the train stops, a tired and disorganized Thomas goes to the water tower for a drink; Gordon laughed and continued on his way.
Thomas was finally quiet when he saw two very strange trucks in the corner. He woke them up, made them tremble, wondering what the accident might be. Annie and Clarabel explain that the trucks, Judy and Jerome, are cranes that make up train wrecks. They tell Thomas that cranes are used to lift things back and forth. James was arriving by train, ready to take the coaches; Thomas noticed the burning smell again, but again, James pretended he hadn’t seen or smelled the smoke, now blowing the smoke.

But as soon as they start going down the other side, the trucks see their opportunity. They force Thomas, making him run at a high speed. Thomas flew down the line until he was sent to the port in Maron and finally stopped in front of some security posts. The fat manager had seen all this and went over with both Thomas and Edward. He orders the two engines to stay in the yard until Thomas knows as much about trucks as Edward.
