CS Lewis book lovers can rest easy. Disney-Republican oil magnate Philip Anschutz’s production company has teamed up with Walden Media to preserve the substance and flavor of the first installment of Lewis’s seven-book “The Chronicles of Narnia.” As in the novel, the prim and proper Pevensie siblings – Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy – are moved from the Blitz-stricken suburb of Finchley to the large, country house of a mysterious academic (Jim Broadbent). One by one, they stumble out from behind the wardrobe and discover Narnia, where the White Witch (Swinton in a wicked tongue) decides that it must always be winter and the big-hearted lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson), the same four children, to lead politics and Narnia. Calling for a return to stability and happiness.

It’s a very British, very Twitted fantasy, a strange cocktail of the New Testament, medieval ideals of monarchy and 1940s family values to distinguish adults. . Director Andrew Adamson (“Shrek”) doesn’t ignore the Christian allegory in Lewis’ story. There are clear scenes of the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension (the last, which involves Aslan walking along the beach at sunset, is unfortunately amusing; in a more pious scene, Lucy and Susan bow like two Marys at the foot of the cross). It’s also made clear that good men owe their political heritage to God: Peter (William Mosley), the newly crowned king of Narnia, is like Olivier’s Henry V.
These subtleties are certainly lost on children, and the film is no more overtly promoted than the book. Judged kindly, Adamson and his team have created a film that’s surprising, funny, and earnestly felt, though it loses steam and magic when it bows to a prolonged battle scene toward the end, and never “Harry Potter” or “matches.” “The Lord of the Rings” for visual excitement. Even so, the overt commercialization of religion in collusion with the “passion of Christ” is still not desirable. At least we don’t have to deal with Aslan’s bloody, weeping wounds.
