Although I more often find myself traveling alone, on the occasions I do travel with friends I haven’t found it to be noticeably cheaper, or cheaper enough to discourage my solo travel in exchange for group travel.

Personally, I didn’t really find that to be the case. Most hotel booking or house rental websites ask how many people are looking for a room and the number of rooms, and often receive a different price quote for a single occupancy.
Sometimes if this is not the case, I have contacted the hotels directly by phone or email and said it is only one person in a double room (if single room rates are not an option) and I get a discount.
If you are traveling alone and don’t mind staying in a hostel, then you are paying per person per bed which is usually drastically cheaper. And my best tip of all, if you can be flexible with accommodation, the later you book the better deal you get.
Nowadays, I don’t even book in advance unless I have to, I find the place I want to stay online on a booking site, then call the hotel directly to check prices and book the cheapest place in between.

The one time I volunteered to arrange transportation on a group trip, I gave up after a day and had to delegate the task to someone else with more patience than me. After all time is money.

It just means I have to get creative with my budget. Between the cost of rental, insurance, gas and parking for RVs, it can be expensive.

Most group travelers save on food by cooking together and sharing meals, something that is harder to do as a solo traveler.
Many times when I stay in hostels or guesthouses with shared kitchens and end up making friends with the other people staying, sometimes we would cook dinner together, but not always.
I usually try to stay in places where breakfast is included so that I leave lunch and dinner to myself. As a general rule, I usually eat a proper meal and a light snack a day to keep costs down, although costs vary greatly depending on where you are in the world.

In many places the meals are so cheap that you don’t even need to budget for them while in others they can break the bank, I try to make a daily meal budget wherever I am if I have to be careful and stick to it.
If you are alone, eating and meals is so easy because you can do what you want and don’t have to compromise on anything.
Over the years I find that I spend less time feeding myself when I’m alone than when I’m with others, because there’s less desire to go out and take over the city and go a little crazy. And I definitely save on booze when I’m alone, a total bonus.

A little flexibility can go a long way in keeping solo travel costs low. Visiting a hot spot for travel during the peak of the holidays will be expensive, solo or not.
First, check which season is considered “high” versus “low” for tourism. I recommend keeping a few destinations in mind that you are interested in and then researching flight and hotel prices based on different dates. While the low season will usually offer the worst weather (whether it’s cold or rainy or extremely hot), my favorite time to go solo is during the so-called “shoulder” season, i.e., the end of the season or the beginning of the season. You can score favorable prices without compromising too much on the weather conditions. I also appreciate that there is less crowd! Another way to save some money is to be flexible about the specific weekdays of travel, such as a midweek flight or an extra early flight. Finally, consider staying at an accommodation just outside the main tourist area instead of in the city center (overpriced).

This is the perfect way to get the hang of a new destination, meet like-minded solo travelers, and not spend a shekel on an activity! You can just google “free walking tour [Barcelona]” – or whatever your destination is! I also love asking the local tour guides for tips on the best restaurants and other activities in the area!
Are you staying at a hostel? Most hostels offer free or discounted activities directly on site! Not staying at a hostel? You can still call and book an activity with them directly! Hostel tours appeal to a younger audience, with a low budget; Again, this is a perfect way to meet other solo travelers! I stayed at one of Selena’s hostels in Costa Rica that offered yoga classes, game nights, and group bonfires!
Another place I like to check out for inexpensive group activities when I’m traveling alone is Airbnb Experiences. These are often cheaper than huge tour companies, and are hosted by locals! Sometimes it allows internal access! For example, I met other travelers on an Airbnb Experience to the famous Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. But, unlike a corporate-led tour, mine was hosted by a man who worked there as a fishmonger! He managed to sneak us into the non-touristy underbelly of the fish market and introduce us to the “real” people and produce, and keep the market alive!! Such an unforgettable experience!

Finally, while it makes sense to book early tours online (as there are sometimes early bird discounts), the cheapest tours and activities are usually offered on the street by locals. Be sure to do some due diligence on the site and ensure it’s not a scam, but these are usually your *best* bet for a reasonable price! Sometimes you can even negotiate!
Even people who like to eat out (ahem, me) may not want to sit down to a fancy dinner every night while traveling alone. This makes the only travel meals cheaper! Casual takeout means you spend less on food each day. If you choose to eat out, it can be fun to sit at the bar and chat with the bartender!
