Scandinavian Christmas Markets: A Culinary Tour

By | May 31, 2026

Scandinavian Christmas Markets: A Culinary Tour – Just like many European countries in winter, Sweden hosts some truly fabulous Christmas markets. The Stockholm Christmas Market is often listed among the best Christmas markets in Europe. There are many other Christmas markets in Sweden that are less famous than the one in Stockholm and one of them is the Christmas market in the Falun mine. The Falun Christmas market takes place in early December. Is called

, which translates as old-fashioned Christmas market. It really gives the feeling of an event frozen somewhere in time, which for me makes it even more magical.

The market is located inside the Falun copper mine, the heart of the industry that made Falun important and prosperous several centuries ago. The mine is now a museum and a UNESCO world heritage site, so this is a Christmas market in a UNESCO site! This setting is probably the strongest feature that gives the Falun Christmas Market its old-fashioned look. As with most Dalarna Christmas markets, the products on sale at the Falun Christmas market are a whole range of traditional crafts and foods produced in the region. It is always very difficult for me not to spend too much money, especially on food, because this is an unmissable opportunity to have access to some delicious delicacies.

Swedish Christmas Market

Among the products on sale at the Falun Christmas market there are mainly Christmas foods and crafts, but also clothes and decorations in general. One thing I buy every year to eat at Christmas is smoked rainbow trout. It is caught from a river in this region and smoked here in the area. Another dish that I always reserve for my Christmas lunch is reindeer meat. Eating reindeer meat at Christmas has become a tradition since I took my boyfriend to Stockholm for the first time. We had visited in December and purchased reindeer and elk meat at the capital’s Christmas market.  These are my usual choices, but there’s a lot more on offer than just smoked fish and meat.

One thing that had intrigued me at that first Swedish Christmas market was the straw goat. I didn’t buy one, but I was very tempted to. Now I don’t find it so strange anymore and I’ve gotten used to the fact that goats and pigs are Christmas animals in here.

Since the market only takes place once a year, we decided to treat ourselves to some food on site and ate a portion

. Kolbulle is a pancake with diced salted pork. Its name means “coal bun” and was the typical food of loggers, hunters and charcoal burners, who spent days away from home and had few options for food. Not your usual healthy meal, but a hearty pick-me-up to enjoy during a day on the snow. Glögg is a traditional drink of the Christmas period, a sort of mulled wine. It can be found both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

We decided to visit the market in the morning and left around 12.30pm. The sun had now fully risen and the sky had cleared, revealing its light. The soil around the mine is rich in sulphur, and on cold days you can see emissions of hotter gases in the cold air. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that magical place.

We woke up this weekend to fresh snow and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it stays. The promise of a good winter came early with the first heavy snow on November 1st. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to last and was soon washed away by warmer temperatures and rain. I won’t be spending Christmas in Sweden this year, but I still hope there’s a white one here. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
