Beyond Pierogi: A New Series Introducing The Rich Variety Of Polish Cuisine And Culture To Americans
Experience the unique tradition of Polish pottery from Boleslavek at the annual Polish Pottery Festival! With live shows, handmade and painted pottery, workshops and more, you won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind event. There are booths with regional products and great deals on pottery pieces! This weekend my American friend came to visit me in Krakow and I was faced with a culinary conundrum. Where can I find a restaurant that is gluten-free (Catherine is gluten-intolerant), vegetarian (neither of us eat meat), and most importantly, serves delicious food? I searched the internet for solutions to this puzzle (like here and here) and below you can read an account of our culinary adventure.
Almost every foreigner visiting Poland wants to try our famous pierogi (Polish dumplings), but where can I find pierogi that are gluten-free? Apparently, at a restaurant near the Wawel Castle called Pod Baranym, which has perhaps the widest array of gluten-free dishes in Krakow. Our Pierogi Ruski (Russian-style dumplings with cottage cheese and potato filling, PLN 24) and Pierogi with Cabbage and Mushrooms (PLN 25) were delicious – covered with onions fried in melted butter and topped with a delicious filling. was full The effect was worsened by the flour being a little too thick but Catherine explained that this could be the fault of the gluten-free flour. Overall, we left the restaurant full and happy.
The next day, we had breakfast at the Shake and Bake Cafe near the Bagatella Theater, which serves gluten-free pastries and shakes. The savory muffins (with cheese and olives) were great but unfortunately they were sprinkled with large salt crystals that turned the muffins into a salt mine. Fortunately, the brownie with peanut butter was very good and almost salt-free. At the cafe, we were accompanied by two pink dwarfs and a cute pink deer. 🙂
We had a hard time choosing our meal at the vegetarian restaurant Cafe Młynek because all the gluten-free dishes and desserts looked really good. In the end, we followed the advice of a friendly waitress and ordered crunchy potato pancakes and spicy pasta with vegetables and hot peppers. The serving was so big that we didn’t have room for dessert. But after lunch we stayed in the restaurant’s beer garden to drink coffee with cardamom and hot ginger lemonade and admire the view of the quaint Volnika Square.
Savouring Kraków: A Culinary Guide
Fortunately, most drinks are naturally gluten-free so we can safely go to our favorite cafes: Mleczarniain Kazimierz (you can read more about it here ) and Forum Przestrzenie near the Vistula River ( It serves really good coffee and homemade lemonade. We spent the evening at the Domówka Cafe, sipping cider and playing a funny board game about shopping during the communist era called “Kolejka” (which means “queue” in Polish). All in all, I think that Catherine’s stay in Krakow was a great success, both from a social and a religious point of view. 🙂

In the beginning, you will go shopping in a bustling market, and you will get all the inside information from your guide about fresh vegetables and produce for sale along the way. Your guide will even be able to teach you some expressions in Polish if you want so you can barter in the market like a real Krakow native!
After this Krakow tour, you’ll be taken to a family home, where you’ll be able to put all that delicious fresh produce to use and get some cooking lessons from Krakow locals. But even better was the cooking teacher. We kneaded and thinned the dough and filled the dough to make the pierogies themselves. The steamed pierogies were delicious and so were the cold beer, polish pucks and smoked cheese. We had so much fun, going out was like being at a dinner party with dear friends. As a note, don’t expect the cute hats and red aprons pictured. They weren’t part of our event but we didn’t feel like we missed anything.
