There are risks associated with traveling alone for everyone, and there are steps you can take to mitigate those risks. Personally, I don’t think that traveling alone as a woman is any more dangerous than any other type of travel. As with most solo travel, regardless of gender, the biggest risk in the wilderness is spraining an ankle, usually in areas without cell service. That means I take extra steps to plan a smooth, stress-free trip.
One aspect of traveling alone is that you are more likely to take pictures for yourself! If you want to be in your own photos, you’ll need a tripod. I use this small, adjustable tripod when shooting video with my phone.

The first step in planning the perfect road trip is to choose a few destinations that interest you. The best way to research road trip destinations is by reading blog posts, guidebooks, and searching on social media. In addition to guidebooks, it can always be a good idea to check places like Alltrails reviews and Google reviews.

As a woman traveling alone, one of the best things you can do to ensure a safe road trip is to choose a place to sleep in advance. Whether you’re reserving a crowded campsite, reserving a hotel, or plotting a physical map of all the camping options scattered nearby, choosing where to sleep is a smart choice.
Having a map of where you plan to sleep can help reduce stress while traveling alone. Many popular campsites fill up early, so booking in advance can help minimize travel time (and, if camping, camp setup time) in the dark.
How To Plan A Perfect Road Trip (for Solo Female Travelers)
For popular campsites, we usually try to reserve a spot at least a few weeks in advance, and even earlier during peak season. When you stay in a hotel, you often have more flexibility. For last-minute trips, I look for first-come, first-serve campgrounds, such as state and national forest campgrounds. On these trips, we typically select at least three potential locations in case the first option gets filled.
Did you know that you can mark your location, create your own maps, and download offline maps from Google Maps? To create your own Google Maps, create a My Maps account.
Downloading offline maps is one of the most important things a solo traveler can do. You never know when your cell service will go out and your route will become inaccessible. Downloading offline maps can help you stay on route even without cell service.
Personally, when I travel alone, I always bring a physical roadmap and mark important locations and backup routes in advance. This way, if you lose cell service or your phone turns off, you don’t have to rely on technology to get you where you need to go.

Once you have your route plan and finalized, entrust it to at least someone you trust! When traveling alone as a woman, it is very important to have someone who knows where you should go.
