Hotels With Unique Cultural Experiences

Rather than a place to stay, the modern luxury hotel has, in itself, become a destination. But the stunning poolscapes, relaxing spa and salon, 5-star restaurant and underutilized fitness center are only part of the story. Because if every city has luxury hotels with world-class service, meaning we don’t have to leave, why travel far from home to get there?

The Ultimate Luxury Experience: Mariaggi’s Theme Suite Hotel And Spa

What still draws us to the search for passports in the back of sock drawers, however, is the drawing of experience in another country, another culture and sometimes another climate. Hotels that connect guests to their surroundings, providing unique, individual experiences, are the true definition of luxury. These four Mexican hotels, resorts and guest houses offer an honest, realistic representation of Mexico’s indigenous culture and environment, while still providing the level of service and amenities we expect from a luxury hotel.

Intended as a ‘reinterpretation of an Oaxacan temple,’ Casa TO provides reflection and tranquility in a busy tourist hotspot, with private high-walled gardens attached to each room. Photos: Jaime Navarro

Nestled between Playa Zicatela and the Oaxacan mountains along the belly of southern Mexico, Casa TO is surrounded by the best of the country’s tourism industry. Bookending high-octane and adventuring activities by land and sea, the hotel’s avant-garde geometric architecture is a ‘reinterpretation of an Oaxacan temple,’ share the project architects, Ludwig Godefroy Architects, who form a ‘radical sensory experience just by entering it. ‘

With an honest design that highlights raw materials such as concrete, clay and wood, the ‘natural environment of Casa TO defines its interior,’ where each guest is provided with a private garden with high wall, framing encroaching vines and fruit trees. TO ‘accentuate textures and add character to its surroundings,’ explain the architects, with unique pieces of furniture and homewares. Made by local artisans, these pieces are also available for visitors to purchase and send home, allowing them to bring back a part of Oaxacan culture.

In remote Seyé, North Yucatan, the Galopina Wild House guest house places its primary and secondary structures at opposite ends of the seven-hectare site of an old hacienda. Guests access the property through the main house, which includes communal spaces such as the dining area, lounge and terrace, while the four private guest rooms are accessible after a walk through the site’s untouched nature.

‘Two of the guest rooms are embedded in the slopes of a hill, with a clear connection to the ground in the form of caves, and two on the top of the hill, where there is a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape , ‘ explain to the architects TACO Taller de Arquitectura Contextual, of the topography and layout of the site.

A Unique Culture Of Creativity And Innovation Is Crafting New India’s Luxury Hospitality Success Stories

In this project, we aim to emphasize the dynamism of the natural movement of the desert by exploring and highlighting the topography created by its wind, ‘ explained Yektajo Valdez Arquitectos, architects at the Paradero Hotel project in Todos Santos, in southern edge of the Baja California peninsula, a desert-dominated environment.

Although the hotel is not positioned in the desert itself, the architects were inspired by visits to the desert, which influenced the placement of the hotel buildings as well as the selection, growth and positioning of endemic desert flora, that makes for not just a realistic wild experience, but a real one. ‘And to complete the whole experience, we’ve created paths with the softest sand in the area to encourage guests to step into the hotel barefoot.’

Natural materials and sustainable architecture ensure that Hotel Terrestre has a minimal impact on its environment, while the resort’s relaxed and open rooms allow guests to enjoy it. Photos: Fabián Martínez

Already set in the flora and fauna of the Oaxacan rainforest, Hotel Terrestre did not need to install additional plantlife to provide spectacular multi-directional views, but instead avoided disturbing what was already there. With visually sensitive buildings made from locally sourced sustainable materials such as clay, brick, and wood, the resort blends into its surroundings.

‘Methods of climate control achieved through innovative construction techniques are replacing reliance on air conditioning,’ explain the architects of the project Taller de Arquitectura X / Alberto Kalach, which allows seven scattered structure to rely entirely on solar power for their energy needs, ensuring that the project remains respectful of the environment it almost reluctantly inhabits. ‘Hotel Terrestre seeks to be a place for lovers of nature and wellness,’ say the architects, with private pools, hammocks and libraries in each suite encouraging a relaxing connection with its surroundings.
