I became a solo traveler out of necessity rather than choice: As a travel writer, I spend a lot of time on my own. And as my friends settled into their lives and got partners, kids, jobs, and mortgages, I found that if I wanted to travel, I had to travel alone.

One of the biggest hurdles for solo travelers is the fear of what others think, but here’s the truth: My Darwin disaster has become one of my favorite memories—one of my favorite campfire stories. Darwin taught me that people don’t see me the way I see myself. I look at solo travelers with respect, not pity, and that’s how people look at me. If they are judgmental thoughts, what does it matter? I will never see them again. The more time I spent on the road alone, the more confidence I gained.

You will have to travel alone. Anyone who tells you differently is lying. But loneliness gets a bad rap. At 41, I’ve spent more time traveling alone than with someone. While some of them are a drag (like carrying all your gear into the airport bathroom), you don’t have a travel companion to watch it for you, and I enjoy the time.
Solitude loosens and focuses my thoughts, though they always begin with strife. Once or twice I found that I wasn’t missing someone I should have known that answered a question I was too afraid to ask at home. Solitude taught me how I like to spend my time. Understanding my own pace, rhythms, and preferences has impacted every aspect of my life, including where and how I live. We rarely have time to be still, to be with ourselves. Traveling alone gives that gift.
Speaking of loneliness, you will meet people on your journey. Traveling alone pushes us outside of our comfort zones, making us more receptive to new people and experiences. Solo travelers are less intimidating and more approachable than groups.
