They pointed me to the small blue and white boats at the end of a well-worn old wooden pier. The captain took my large suitcase and quickly threw it overboard. I climbed into the lancha (boat), going down a few steps, careful not to fall off the boat as it rocked to the other side. I was hosted by some local Mayan women; They all wore red Mayan clothing, which included huipiles, cortes (veils) and fajas (belts). The little girl at the front of the boat smiled at me with an innocent, toothless smile as we began our journey from the beach to Lake Atitlán. About 20 minutes later, after marveling at the beautiful turquoise water and fresh green highlands, the small boat pulled into a well-kept private dock. Surrounded by greenery and immersed in nature, I arrived at the eco-friendly lodge, Laguna Lodge. I knew I was starting my journey on the lake in a different and special place.

In my daily life and in my travels, I like to choose three words every day. Three words that harness the energy around me, but three words that facilitate important life experiences, feelings, and memories. Relaxation, beauty, and nature best describe Laguna Lodge, an ‘Eco-Resort and Nature Reserve’ located on the beautiful Lake Atitlán. These are some of the powerful words I chose to use in my experience as a guest on one of National Geographic’s World Legacy Award Finalists.
The only way to get to Laguna Lodge is by small boat or by foot walking along the beach from the nearby village of Santa Cruz. There is no wake-up call, which increases the ability to rest. The bedroom was quiet all day. Every once in a while, you’ll hear a lancha, some local songbirds, and local Mayan fishermen chatting in Kachiquel on the water in their old handmade boats.
Solo Female Travel When looking for a place to stay on Lake Atitlán, I didn’t go to guide books or travel websites. I didn’t learn about Laguna Lodge from National Geographic. When deciding on a personal trip, I usually talk to people, ask for directions or just follow my heart. I came across Laguna Lodge by doing a personal search on Google Maps. The words “Eco-Resort and Nature Reserve” piqued my interest.
