Gladys Aylward The Adventure Of A Lifetime
Gladys Aylward lived from 1902 to 1970. She spent many of these years in China, her adopted country. She had no formal education and was a housemaid, but she was determined to go to China for God. Ms. Aylward raised the money necessary to travel overland by train, boat, mule and on foot to Yangcheng, China. She helped Mrs. Lawson, the missionary who was already there, open an inn for the mule trains to relax at night and teach them Bible stories. She was the local foot inspector (to prevent foot binding) and stopped a prison riot. All of these activities showed the local mandarins and villagers how important God was to Ms. Aylward. This earned her the name Ai-weh-deh, or “virtuous one.” In 1936 she became a Chinese citizen and had already adopted orphans. The Japanese attacked in 1938 and she carried 94 children to safety along a 100-mile mountain trail system. She then fell ill and returned to England when the communists took power. She returned to Formosa, Taiwan, in 1957, where she was able to teach and help the Chinese.

The first part of the study includes an introduction, quotes from the Bible, creating a display corner, chapter questions, areas for students to explore (essay topics, creative writing, practical projects, and more), ways to contact the local community, various social science topics , related topics to explore, ideas for hosting an event to show what was learned, and other resources. There are also simple sentences in Chinese! The second part of the study contains a fact sheet and maps.

Book and unit study can take as little or as much time as you and your children would like.
Everyone knows that it’s fun to read a book alone, but it’s also fun to read a book with others. This is how C and I decided to approach this book. We read either indoors with her coloring page in an adult coloring book or outside with the sidewalk chalk. When I looked at the unit study, I decided that answering the chapter questions would work best in our current schedule. We started answering the questions after several chapters, but soon realized that wasn’t such a good idea. Too much information was forgotten within a few days. It worked much better to read the chapter and then immediately answer the questions. It was a fun bonding time between the two of us. The open-ended, essay-style questions really helped us share our opinions and learn even more.
– I would really like to see a simple timeline in either the book or the unit study. It was difficult for us to keep track of the different years and where Ms. Aylward was at that time. Sometimes we weren’t sure how much time she spent in one place and what year it was.

This was done in 1958. It was interesting to see how different it was compared to Ms. Aylward’s real life. I’m glad there are books like this so we can get to know her real life.

1. I think there should be a timeline for the book. A timeline would be helpful because then you would know when something happened.

Gladys Aylward probably had similar feelings. Born in Britain in the early 1900s, she became a Baptist missionary in China and ministered among poor children for 25 years. However, their success on the mission field came only after great difficulties.
As an adult, Aylward stood less than five feet tall in her ragged clothing and had little formal education. It seemed unlikely that this little woman would make a big difference in the world. Based on her qualifications, it was doubtful that she would influence thousands with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
When our lives feel stagnant and ordinary, Aylward’s life can encourage us. God uses the weak—not the strong—so that no flesh can boast in His presence (1 Corinthians 1:27-31). Aylward did not intend to become a well-known missionary. She didn’t expect to change the world. She simply turned her face to Christ and then to China. God did the rest.
Aylward felt that God wanted her to go to China, but many people urged her to continue the evangelism work at home instead. Her work among England’s poorest citizens proved to be good work indeed, but the thought of lost souls in China tormented her and left her feeling that God wanted her there. Aylward didn’t just want to do good works; She longed for God’s will, which meant doing the specific work He had called her to do. That meant going to China.
Gladys Aylward: The Power Of Childlike Faith
Aylward’s mentors insisted that she join a missionary society, enroll in their college, and be sent to the mission field under their care. However, the missionary society committee found her unsuitable in terms of education and intellect. They rejected her and told her that the Chinese language was far too difficult for her to learn. With her rejection by the missionary society, Aylward’s dream seemed impossible.
Without the support of a missionary organization, Aylward was not qualified. She had little money and had no contacts. Aylward eventually got to China by traveling through a war zone on a one-way ticket and a rationed amount of food.
These struggles are similar to those of many modern would-be missionaries. Whether we are struggling to find the mission organization that is right for us or we are concerned about not being able to provide enough support for our family, we cannot boast that we can do it no matter what.
Instead, we should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:13-17). Like Aylward, we set our faces where we believe God wants us to serve; and if God wills, he will take us there.

Early in her time in China, Aylward lived with an experienced missionary and innkeeper. Since she didn’t yet speak the language, she looked after the guests’ mules while the missionary gave Bible studies nearby. Night after night, Aylward listened to God’s Word in Chinese and eventually learned the language.
