There are beautiful palm beaches all around the island, and the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees Celsius all year round. The crystal clear waters of Shiraho and the coral reef at Kabira Bay are home to a spectacular array of colorful marine life, including the stunning manta ray, which regularly visits Ishigaki. If you’re lucky, you might spot the Iriomote wildcat, of which there are believed to be only 100 left in the dense hills of the unknown jungle.

White knuckled, I released my grip and took a deep breath as the flight attendant coolly announced that we had reached our final cruising altitude. I relaxed in my seat, loosened my seatbelt, and turned my attention to the in-flight entertainment. The flight attendant came on the loudspeaker to let us know that the journey to our final destination would be smooth, but something still didn’t feel quite right. It hit me like a sudden turbulence – I had no idea what I was doing. When I landed in the Philippines, I had no plan – no itinerary, no accommodations, no transportation. Nothing.
After missing our connecting flight from South Korea, we finally arrived in Cebu just after 3am. It was quiet at the airport as Quin and I got off the plane. After removing several layers of clothing to combat the heat that assaulted my senses as soon as I hit the asphalt, I turned my attention back to more important things. Two flights and eighteen hours later, we still had no idea what we were doing.
Island Hopping: A Tropical Adventure In The Gulf Of Thailand
With no plan, we settled on chairs outside baggage claim, comforted by the next best thing: Wi-Fi. By comparing Instagram collections, Pinterest boards, and random screenshots, we put together a rough itinerary for the next 10 days of island hopping in the Philippines. The good news…we finally had a plan. The bad news was that we had to spend the rest of the night at the airport.
Our 10-day Philippines island hopping itinerary was created in the middle of the night at an airport after 19 hours of driving. Other than that, I wouldn’t have changed a thing! Of course, more time would have been ideal – that’s always the case. But life happens, and you have to do the best you can with the cards you’re dealt. And that’s exactly what we did!
As the sun rose we boarded a flight to Coron. Choosing to fly to Coron to begin our island hopping adventure got us exactly where we wanted to be and probably saved us days of overland travel time. We spent three days on Coron exploring the surrounding islands, lagoons and beaches. From Coron we took the “Fast Ferry”* to El Nido (approx. 3 1/2 journey). After two days in El Nido, we took the fast ferry back to Coron and then boarded our flight back to Cebu. We rented a car in Cebu City** and drove south to the town of Moalboal, our home base for the rest of the trip.

Island Hopping In Seychelles (+how You Can Do It Too)
* There is no fast travel in the Philippines. We quickly learned not to trust the time estimates on Google Maps and to expect delays everywhere. This was particularly true for road traffic. **Although renting a car gave us flexibility and probably saved quite a bit of time, I would NOT recommend it unless you have experience driving in Asia. Driving in the Philippines was stressful at best and dangerous at worst. We made it through unscathed, but in the end I’m not sure the pros outweighed the cons.
What can I say, these twins are definitely not identical, but they are both blessed with good genes! Twin Lagoons are a popular tourist destination for good reason. Surrounded by high cliffs and filled with crystal clear water, the lagoons are a must-see. You won’t be alone. Large tour groups come and go throughout the day, but if you stay long enough you can find a little piece of paradise for yourself.
Banol Beach was exactly what I imagined the Philippines would be like. Bright turquoise waters splash over an idyllic silicon-white sand beach below towering cliffs. And if that wasn’t picturesque enough, the cliffs are dotted with old fishing huts that transport you to another – simpler – place and time. It is a popular stop on many tours that depart from Coron. So try to go early to avoid the crowds.
In the town of El Nido you will be bombarded by tour operators all offering the same tours to different beaches and islands. To be precise, there are generally four options – the imaginatively named A, B, C and D.
