The Perfect Usa Deep South Road Trip Itinerary
DAYS 13, 14 & 12 Drive west on I-10 to experience another great southern port city, New Orleans. In many ways, New Orleans is Mobile’s twin city, only bigger. Both are important port cities with similar histories, including a love of Mardi Gras and food. Fly home on the last day. The plan is to stay here for a few days before making our way down to New Orleans, via Memphis and Jackson.
We stayed in the city center, at the Hyatt Place Hotel. Not only does it have secure on-site parking, but a complimentary shuttle service is available to guests upon request to pick you up and drop you off anywhere within a five-mile radius of the property.
We take advantage of this service and head straight to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where you can hear the ghostly echoes of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley reverberate through its hallowed halls, along with new voices like Taylor Swift and Luke Coombs.
Guitars of all shapes and sizes adorn the walls here, and on display is a vast collection of sequins and bedazzled suits once worn by some of the biggest icons in country music.
The Best New Restaurant In Every Southern State 2024
I love reading the soul-baring verses in the old notebooks displayed throughout the museum. They manage to capture the true essence of the human experience and remind me that country music is a powerful form of storytelling.
We decided to grab a drink along Broadway, just a short walk from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
The popular tourist strip — known for its fistfights, neon lights and raucous bachelorette parties — runs perpendicular to the Cumberland River and stretches about a mile from 21st Avenue South to First Avenue.
Inside The Stage, a live music venue with acts on all three levels, we order a beer and chat to a guy sitting nearby who thinks our Aussie accents sound “funny”.

He is from Colorado but comes to Nashville often for work. He tells us that the Nashville Sounds are playing this weekend and we should consider going while we’re in town.
We ask him where else to go along Broadway, and he tells us about Tootsie, Second Fiddle and Robert’s Western World.
“Like The Stage, they’re more of your traditional honky tonks that tend to attract the best musicians,” he says.
“All places with celebrity names are nowhere near as good or authentic – trust me.”
Where To Eat Crispy Fried Chicken In New Orleans
Not only do we take him at his word, but he ends up spending the rest of the whiskey-soaked evening with us, telling us who’s who in the country music scene.
The real highlight was seeing a world class violinist named Renae Truex take the stage. She is an incredibly skilled performer with a lot of charisma.
The next morning we visit Cheekwood Estate in Nashville’s Belle Meade neighborhood, home to a beautiful 1930s mansion and more than 22 acres of cultivated gardens and sculpture trails.
Each year, the estate’s calendar is filled with art exhibitions and cultural events organized by local volunteers from the Cheekwood Committee.
Iconic Dishes To Try In The Southern States
Not only is there an exhibition by renowned British artist Bruce Munro while we’re here, but we’ll also be able to see a collection of geometric sculptures by Cuban-born American artist Carmen Herrera as part of the Estructuras exhibition.
After spending most of the morning here, we head back to the main part of Nashville and visit the Smokey Ole Distillery for drinks and food.
The Luna Distillery is packed with people doing tastings, watching sports and listening to live music in the outdoor courtyard.
Later that afternoon, we take a cab to First Horizon Park to watch the little league baseball game our friend told us about last night. It’s fun to sit among local fans who are passionate about their team. And luckily for them, the Nashville Sounds end up beating the Gwinnett Stripers.
Where To Eat, Sleep, And Explore In New Orleans
The only negative part of the afternoon was my skinny hot dog. It’s a stark reminder that in a city known for its musical prowess, you shouldn’t count on the food being good.
The three-hour trip from Nashville is an easy drive, especially if you listen to a Memphis-centric playlist featuring songs by Elvis, Otis Redding, BB King, Aretha Franklin, Al Green and Jerry Lee Lewis.
The building itself has guarded South Main Street for over 100 years, and as its name suggests, was once the city’s main railway station.
There is secure parking on the property and all the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. We were even upgraded to one of the Main Line suites which has a king size bedroom, separate living room and large bathroom with tons of natural light.

As for the overall design of the hotel, it’s hard to tell which elements are pre-existing and which were added as part of a recent renovation. Everything comes together with a purpose, which is a testament to its good design.
