Expedition Escapades: Adventures In Remote Corners – This remote Overland road was designed to test the Escapade Backcountry Trailer, and we decided to push it hard to see if it lived up to its name. The cross-country trip was a 7-day, 1,356-mile adventure into the remote areas of southern Utah. A full review of the trailer is linked at the end of this article.
Our first real remote land destination was Alstrom Point, perched on a cliff high above Lake Powell. The trail to the point is 25 miles along a dirt road from Big Water and the last mile is the only time you really need high clearance and maybe a 4High. That said, weather conditions can change quickly in this area and the dusty off-road tracks have a reputation for turning into mud-sucking cars when it rains.

The gods were on our side and we found the perfect ground campsite right at the edge of the cliff face. As always, the desert winds howled for 24 hours and despite our original plan to stay in this wonderful area for two days, we decided to move on. Last year we experienced the same conditions and had our roof tent blown up. This year we definitely appreciated the comfort and warmth of being in an enclosed trailer.
Embark On Epic Adventures
Day 3 was supposed to be our long distance ride day as our plan was to hike 70+ miles on various backcountry trails up to the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument. Quickly exiting the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, the dirt road ascends Kelly Grade to the 6,500-foot elevation of the Kaiparowitz Plateau. This road is a 5-mile, 1,200-foot climb with numerous switchbacks and steep drop-offs. Although it is not technically difficult when dry, it is steep and narrow and we would have been in trouble if we had had platforms coming our way. When you reach the top, you can see Page and Lake Powell to the south and the Navajo Mountains far to the east.
Continuing along the slow-moving but beautiful Smoky Mountain Trail (we covered 25 miles in 2.5 hours), we eventually veered east to find the Colett Canyon trailhead on the left, which connects the Smoky Mountain and Hole in the Wall Trails. Left Collett is a 12-mile one-way canyon trail with 1,312 feet of elevation gain. Certainly towing the Escapade Backcountry Trailer through here could have been problematic due to the narrowness of the canyon and potential for washouts. However, the off-road course was worth the risk as it offered a mix of remote beauty, incredible rock formations and just enough technicality to really test the trailer.
By the end of this 7-hour day in the backcountry of Southern Utah, we had covered 70+ miles through beautiful and remote terrain, and we had the amazing realization that we hadn’t seen a soul. A vehicle-assisted adventure like this doesn’t get much better!
After 4 days of landing in the desert it was time to head up into the mountains of the Dixie National Forest. Despite the fact that the 38-mile Hells Backbone Trail was impassable, we discovered the perfect campsite in the pines next to a small raging stream. So perfect in fact, we stayed for two nights to enjoy the beauty of the mountains and slow down. Camping at 8,200 feet of terrain in early April, the night temperature was 23 degrees, but again it was nice and warm in the trailer.
